Will AI Replace Personal Trainers? (Here's the Honest Truth)
By Sean McGarrity · 17 July 2026
AI will replace a huge chunk of the personal training industry — and honestly, it should. Here's who's safe, who isn't, and why real coaching can never be automated.
Yes.
It will.
And honestly? A huge chunk of the personal training industry deserves to be replaced by it.
Now before ye fire back an email calling me a cynical bollix, hear me out. Because there's a version of this industry that absolutely should be replaced by AI. And there's a version that never will be. Knowing the difference between the two might be the most important thing ye read all year.
So grab a coffee. Let's get into it.
The Trainers Who Should Be Worried
Let me paint ye a wee picture.
There's a trainer out there right now, probably in your own gym, whose entire value looks something like this. They write ye a twelve week programme. They hand ye a food plan with your macros broken down. They count your reps. They post motivational quotes on Instagram between sets while you're doing your warm up.
And ChatGPT does every single one of those things faster, cheaper, and frankly better than most of them ever will.
I'm not trying to be a bollix about it. I'm just telling ye the truth as I see it after sixteen years of this.
The macro coach who emails ye a PDF every few months? Replaced. The online trainer whose entire service is a generic programme and a WhatsApp check in once a week? Replaced. The six week transformation merchant who's constantly chasing the next client because the last one never stuck around? Replaced. The PT competing on price because they genuinely cannot explain why they're worth more than the fella down the road doing the exact same thing for thirty euro less?
Gone.
And here's the thing. That stuff didn't just get threatened by AI. It died years ago mate. Most of the market just hasn't had the decency to tell them yet.
But here's what nobody's talking about.
While everyone's running around with their hair on fire panicking about robots taking over the fitness industry, there's a group of coaches who aren't worried. Not even slightly. And it's not because they're burying their heads in the sand.
It's because they understand something fundamental that most people in this industry have completely missed.
Information doesn't cause transformation. Implementation does.
Information Doesn't Cause Transformation. Implementation Does.
Read that again.
Because this is the bit that changes everything.
The fitness industry has spent decades confusing the two. More programmes. More food plans. More macro tracking. More information. And people are still stuck. Still starting over every January. Still not getting the results they want despite knowing exactly what they should be doing.
Why?
Because knowing what to do has never been the problem.
Doing it consistently, sustainably, in the context of a real complicated messy human life — that's the problem. And that's not an information problem. That's a coaching problem.
Think about it this way. Every person who's ever been overweight already knows that vegetables are better than chips. Every person who's ever skipped the gym already knows that showing up would be better than not showing up. The information is there. It's always been there. Google has made absolutely sure of that.
What's missing is the implementation. And implementation is a human problem that requires a human solution.
This is the thing that genuinely separates a coach from a programme writer. And it's the thing that AI will never be able to replicate no matter how sophisticated it gets.
At Elite we've spent sixteen years building a coaching system around this idea. One of our co-founders, Jason Kane, has a Master's degree in coaching. Not fitness coaching. Actual coaching. The psychology of human performance and behavioural change. He's applied it at the highest level imaginable. Kelly Harrington, two Olympic gold medals in boxing, now heading to her third Olympics. Craig Copée, who earned a one championship fight contract worth a hundred grand in Thailand. That's not theory. That's methodology proven where the stakes couldn't be higher.
And Jason built all of that into the Elite Coaching Certification.
So what does real coaching actually look like on the gym floor?
It starts with a genuine conversation. Not "here's your programme, off ye go." A real structured conversation that figures out what this person actually wants, where they genuinely are right now, what options are realistically available to them, and what the actual next step looks like that they'll commit to and follow through on.
That's what we call the GROW model of coaching. Goal. Reality. Options. Way forward. Simple in concept. Phucking powerful in practice. And the reason most clients fail their trainers is because most trainers skip this conversation entirely.
They assume they already know what the client needs. They hand over the programme, the food plan, and then scratch their head six weeks later when the client disappears.
A real coach meets people where they actually are. Not where you want them to be. Not where they should be. Where they are right now. And that requires understanding human behaviour at a level that takes years to develop and cannot be downloaded from the internet or generated by an algorithm.
It also requires understanding why people do the things they do. Why someone who genuinely wants to change keeps self sabotaging. Why someone who shows up every week still isn't getting results. Why two people can follow the exact same programme and get completely different outcomes.
That's the psychology of behavioural change. Understanding where someone actually is in their readiness to transform, not where you want them to be, and knowing how to meet them there and move them forward. It's one of the most important things we teach and you won't find it on any other PT course in Ireland. Because you can't teach it from a textbook in a classroom. You have to learn it by actually coaching real people under the guidance of someone who knows what they're looking at.
And no phucking AI on earth can do that.
Knowing What to Prescribe Is Only Half the Job. Knowing Who You're Prescribing It For Is Everything.
Here's where most trainers fall down completely.
They learn a bunch of exercises. They learn how to write a programme. And then they apply that same programme to every single client who walks through the door because it's the only one they know how to write.
Three sets of ten. Same exercises. Same structure. Same logic that's been recycled since Arnold Schwarzenegger was competing in the nineteen sixties. And I say that with no disrespect to Arnold because the man is an absolute legend. But your forty five year old client with a dodgy shoulder, two kids, chronic stress and hasn't trained properly in a decade is not Arnold Schwarzenegger. And they don't need Arnold's programme.
They need their programme.
And figuring out what that looks like starts long before anyone picks up a weight.
The answers to what a client actually needs aren't in the programme. They're in the person. Their psychology. Their environment. Their relationships. Their stress levels. Their sleep. Their history with food and exercise and their own body. All of it affects results. In coaching we call this the biopsychosocial model. Looking at every client through the lens of their biological, psychological and social reality all at once. Not just their training history. Their whole human context. And once ye start seeing people this way ye genuinely cannot unsee it. Because suddenly you realise that the reason someone isn't getting results has nothing to do with their programme and everything to do with their life.
At Elite we teach our coaches how to do a full assessment of the human being in front of them before a single exercise is prescribed. Not just their fitness level. Their movement capacity and quality. Their psychosocial situation. The environmental factors in their life that will either support or undermine any programme ye write. What their body can actually do right now and what it can't.
What we're building is what we call a global movement map. A complete picture of what this person's body can and can't do right now. What's on their trainable menu. What needs to be worked around. What needs to be addressed before we even think about prescription. We've borrowed the best assessment tools from physiotherapy, physical therapy and behavioural science because those tools exist for a reason and fitness coaches have been ignoring them for decades.
And it means our graduates walk into a session with a new client and actually know what they're looking at.
Not "what's the best exercise for chest."
What's the best exercise for this specific human being, with this specific goal, this specific movement capacity, this specific life situation, right now today?
That question changes everything. It changes the programme. It changes the conversation. It changes the relationship. And it changes the results.
Because when someone feels genuinely understood, when they feel like the plan they've been given was built specifically for them and nobody else, they show up differently. They commit differently. They follow through differently.
That's not information. That's implementation. And that's coaching.
They Come For the Results. They Stay For the Experience.
Now here's the bit most coaches never figure out until it's too late.
Getting someone a result is the price of entry. It's what you're supposed to do. The bare minimum. The thing that makes someone stay for ten, twelve, fifteen years and refer everyone they know is the experience you create around the result.
The environment. The culture. The feeling they get every single time they walk through your door.
One of our graduates, Tiernan Bradley, came through the ECC and sat down with us on our business day to figure out not just how to coach but who he actually wanted to coach and what he wanted to do for them specifically. What came out of that conversation was something called Project Man. A coaching service built specifically for dads who wanted to get back to peak physical condition and feel, move and look like they did in their thirties again.
Not "three sessions a week and a food plan." A specific outcome for a specific kind of person delivered through a specific experience built around what those people actually need.
Project Man took off online. It grew so fast that Tiernan eventually had enough to open his own physical gym in Newtownmountkennedy. Built entirely on the back of understanding who he served and what transformation he was actually delivering. I still consult with Tiernan to this day. That's how well it worked.
One of our graduates, Ciaran Mason, came to us with crippling social anxiety. Genuinely couldn't speak in front of people. Six weeks later he walked out with a job already secured and two clients starting on Monday. Three years after that he's managing multiple gyms. Not because he had the best programme. Because he understood people. Because he knew how to make someone feel genuinely seen, supported and capable of more than they believed about themselves.
Another graduate, Ryan, told me on our first call that his dream was to have his own gym, his own clients, training people for competitions. He thought it was years away. Six months after finishing the course he sent me this.
Flying it with clients. Have nine at the minute. One doing powerlifting, a fella doing strongman competing in July, a kickboxer with a bad hip so we're working on mobility, the rest strength and conditioning. To be honest Sean I've never been so happy with life, everything is really after coming together. Nowhere in town would let me train people so I built my own gym. That first day you rang me you asked what my end goal was. I told you I wanted my own gym, my own reliable clients, training people for competitions. And now I'm doing it already. I've actually shocked myself.
— Ryan, Elite Academy Graduate
Six months. His own gym. Nine clients across four disciplines.
And Darragh Butler, who owns DBK Fitness in Glasthule, one of the most successful boutique coaching gyms in Dublin, has hired his entire team of seven coaches from Elite. Every single one. Here's what he told me about why.
PTs from other courses crumble the second they're asked to coach a real person. They're full of theory but can't demonstrate the skills. Elite grads walk in calm, confident and capable because they've already done it for real. That's why I don't waste time hiring from anywhere else.
— Darragh Butler, Owner, DBK Fitness Glasthule
That's what happens when ye actually know how to coach. When ye understand the person, not just the programme. When ye can deliver results and wrap an experience around them that makes people stay, refer their friends, and build relationships that are worth far more over a lifetime than any six week transformation package ever will be.
The Honest Truth
AI can write the programme.
It cannot be the coach.
It cannot sit with someone and understand why they keep self sabotaging. It cannot build a global movement map. It cannot apply the GROW model in real time or understand where someone sits in their readiness to change. It cannot see the full biopsychosocial picture of a human being's life and prescribe something that actually fits them where they actually are. It cannot make someone feel genuinely understood. It cannot create the kind of experience that keeps people coming back for fifteen years.
Those things require a human being who actually knows what they're doing.
And the coaches who understand that information was never the thing that caused transformation, that implementation is everything, that real coaching is a skill that takes genuine education to develop — those coaches are completely insulated from everything AI is about to do to this industry.
Like a vaccine.
This is what we've been building at Elite for sixteen years. Not because we read it in a book somewhere. Because we actually do it every single day in our gym with real clients, real coaches, real results. Jason's methodology. The assessment system. The coaching psychology. The business knowledge. All of it built into one course and proven at every level from the gym floor all the way to two Olympic gold medals.
If that sounds like something worth knowing more about, you'll find us here.
