What A Great Coach Actually Looks Like? (It's Not What You Think)

By Sean McGarrity · 28 May 2026

The fitness industry has been selling people a lie for years. Here's the truth.

how to become a personal trainer

Let me ask you something.

When you picture a personal trainer in your head right now, what do you see?

Six pack. Gymshark gear. Instagram reel. Protein shake. Fifteen thousand followers and a highlight reel that makes you feel like an absolute slob just looking at it.

Sound about right?

Here's the thing though.

That picture is complete and utter bollox.

And I say that as someone who's been in this industry for over sixteen years. Someone who owns a gym, coaches real people every single day, and has put hundreds of coaches through their paces on the gym floor.

The fitness industry has sold you, and probably your mates too, a lie. That to be a great coach you need to look like one first.

You don't.

The Fear Nobody Talks About

I do application calls every week with people who want to become coaches. Brilliant people. Passionate people. People who've seen what fitness has done for their own life and are absolutely burning to share that with others.

And nearly every single one of them, at some point in the conversation, says some version of this.

"I just don't know if I look like a trainer, ye know?"

Or worse, they've already had someone say it to them. A mate. A family member. Some gobshite at the gym who reckons you need to look like you've stepped off a stage before you're allowed to help anyone.

I totally get why that fear is there like.

We're saturated with it. Every time you open Instagram you're getting hit with another highlight reel. Perfect bodies. Perfect lighting. Perfect lives. And somewhere along the way the message got into people's heads that THAT is what coaching looks like.

It's not. That's just marketing mate.

What Clients Actually Want

Here's what I've picked up from sixteen years of watching coaches do well and watching coaches fall flat on their faces in the real world.

Your clients don't want a fitness model. They want someone who actually gives a shyte about them.

They want to feel heard. They want to feel understood. Not judged. They want someone who can look at where they are right now, not where they should be or where Instagram says they should be, and just help them take the next step. Ye know what I mean?

Think about the people who are most likely to come to you as a coach. They're not competitive athletes. They're not bodybuilders. They're real people. Busy people. Stressed people. People dealing with bad backs and night shifts and kids and anxiety and all the complicated messy stuff that just comes with being a normal human being.

And what those people need from you has got absolutely nothing to do with how many pull ups you can knock out.

What they need is connection.

The Skill Nobody's Teaching...

Right, this is where it gets interesting. And this is where most courses just completely drop the ball.

The fitness industry is obsessed with the physical side of coaching. Programming. Macros. Exercise selection. Sets and reps. And look, that stuff matters, you need to know it, you need to be competent in it.

But here's the uncomfortable truth.

ChatGPT will write you a programme faster than any trainer alive. It'll calculate macros in seconds. It'll generate a twelve week plan with progressive overload built in before you've even finished your coffee. And it'll do it for free. Forever.

So if that's all you're bringing to the table as a coach? You're already done mate.

The thing that can't be replaced, the thing that will never be commoditised, is the human connection. The ability to sit across from someone and actually understand what's going on for them. Why they keep falling off the wagon. Why they say they want to change but keep getting in their own way. What's really driving them underneath all the surface level stuff.

That's behavioural psychology. That's motivational interviewing. That's understanding how people actually work, not just how muscles work.

And almost nobody in this industry is teaching it properly.

Because to teach it properly you have to actually be doing it. Every day. With real clients. In a real gym. Dealing with real problems and real people and all the madness that comes with that.

You can't teach this stuff from a PowerPoint. You can't learn it from a textbook either.

You learn it the same way you learn any proper skill. By doing it, over and over, under the eye of someone who's already figured it out.

The Race to the Bottom

Here's another thing worth saying while we're at it.

The six week shred programme is dead.

I know it doesn't look dead. You still see them everywhere. Every second coach on Instagram flogging a PDF and a WhatsApp group for ninety quid.

But it's a race to the bottom like. Every coach is doing the same thing. The prices keep dropping. The clients keep churning.

Because if your entire value as a coach is a generic programme and a macro split, you're competing with free. You're competing with YouTube. You're competing with apps that cost less per month than a single session with you.

The coaches who are doing well, the ones who are fully booked, who have waiting lists, who charge what they're actually worth, are the ones who went deeper.

They learned the real craft. The human side of coaching that most people don't even know exists until someone shows it to them.

They figured out how to work with all kinds of people. Different goals. Different backgrounds. Different struggles. Different histories with their own bodies.

And because of that they became somebody clients couldn't just replace with an app.

Not because of their abs. Because of their ability to connect with another human being and actually help them change.

If You Wanted to Learn to Cook

Let me put it another way.

If you wanted to become a serious chef, not just someone who can follow a recipe off Google, but someone who can actually cook, where would you go?

You wouldn't sit in a lecture hall for three years reading about knife skills. You'd go find the best kitchen you could. You'd get yourself in front of a proper chef who actually knows what they're doing. You'd spend hours making mistakes and fixing them and learning in real time what actually works.

That's how any proper craft gets learned.

Coaching is exactly the same.

So if I was starting out today and I genuinely wanted to become a great coach, I'd look for someone who is coaching people brilliantly right now. Not someone who coached people ten years ago and now just sells courses about it. Someone who owns an actual coaching business, gets results with real clients every single day, and has the track record to back it up.

Then I'd pay that person to show me how they do it.

I'd want to be in their environment. Watching how they operate. Learning their system. Getting an understanding of not just the what but the why behind every single decision they make.

Because that's the only way to actually absorb this stuff properly.

And look, it just so happens that's exactly what we do at Elite.

Everything we teach on the Elite Coaching Certification comes directly from what we do every day in our own gym with our own clients. It's not borrowed from some textbook. It's not theoretical. It's a coaching system we've been building and testing and refining for over sixteen years.

Including the human stuff. The communication. The behavioural psychology. The motivational interviewing. The bits that actually make the difference between a coach who keeps clients for years and a coach who's constantly starting from scratch every six weeks.

One Last Thing

Gym owners ring us all the time looking for coaches.

And they always tell us the same thing.

When they see Elite on a CV, that's the first interview. Every time.

Not because of what's written on the certificate. Because of what our graduates can actually do when they're standing in front of a real person on a gym floor.

That's the difference.

Not the abs. Not the following.

The ability to connect with another human being and help them actually change their life.

That's what coaching is.

And if that's what you want to learn, ye know where to find us.
