Fitness Models Make the Worst Coaches
By Sean McGarrity · 27 May 2026
What I’m gonna say is going to ruffle a few feathers.
In fact, I'm certain a few people will be shaking their fists in anger as they read what I'm about to say.
But, it needs to be said.
And this came up at our last open day too.
Guys thinking about applying for the full time and part time courses seemed to have this huge fear that
because they feel like they don’t *look* like some pre-conceived idea they have of how trainers *should* look? They think they don't have the right to even entertain the idea of becoming a coach or trainer.
They worry they won’t be able to get any clients.
They’re terrified no one’s gonna take them seriously
Have this mad idea that they’ll be laughed at for even considering becoming a personal trainer or coach.
Simply because they can’t do 20 pullups in a row, deadlift more than 200kg’s and have a wee bit more bodyfat than your average greyhound.
When in my humble (but correct) opinion?
Thats ^^ all Bullshyte.
Fact is;
Your average client couldn’t care less about you, your abs, (or lack of them) About how you look and what YOU can do. And waaay more about how you can help THEM look, feel and, perform their best.
They care way more about...
How much you actually listen.
How well you understand them on a personal level.
How well you can empathise with and create a real coaching connection is what really matters not your abs.
Put simply
Your clients goals, abilities and priorities are what’s most important.
Without giving too much away;
Some of the most important aspects of the coaching connection is fostering "intrinsic motivation" and "unconditional positive regard". Let me explain that simply; It all boils down to understanding how to approach each client in a non-judgmental way that intrinsically motivates them to chase after their goals.
But then that’s something
Those “Instafluencers” simply won’t ever get.
Usually cause they’re waaaay to busy taking (Yet even more) pictures of their "Gluteus ass-imous" while they pull their leggings up their arse crack in an attempt to gain more "likes" and followers while looking like an escort service.
Thinking (mistakenly) thats how you market to get clients.
While it's probably great for an only fans account (to be fair) but its not how to market yourself to gain the kind of clients who want to pay you for help.
But I, digress,
Back to what coaching actually is about;
See, this whole behavioural change psychology is being completely missed these days.
Since no one is teaching it.
And even far less understand it. Since everyone is focusing on the wrong thing; "IMAGE".
Now if any of the language or terms I've mentioned are new?
Don't worry.
Because this is something we cover
In a tonne of detail on the Elite Coaching Course.
As we created this approach ourselves from actually working with people in the real word in Elite gym and testing out the best approaches?
It no doubt creates a very unfair advantage for any Elite Graduates
And I’ve heard more stories than I can count...
About how impressed employers are when they interview our graduates and find it hard to believe they have this kind of understanding after our 6 or 12 weeks course they all thought they were university students.
And thats before I mention the GROW model of coaching we use and teach on the course which when coupled with the motivational interviewing techniques and the BJ Fogg Tiny Habits stuff, well its no wonder our students are operating on a whole new level compared to anyone else out there.
SO you see, it's not about you or your photoshoot pics.
And listen before I get hate mail;
If you're already in great shape well woopdedoo for ye, thats all great and all.
But if you lack the skills I speak of here it will work as reverse credibility because while you're able to get yourself in great shape thats has no bearing on your ability to do it with others.
Without understanding the psychology that drives human behaviour and decision making trainers revert to "food plans" and "macros" since thats all they know.
LOLZ.
Its like the old saying "when all you've got is a hammer everything begins to look like a nail"
While coaches who understand what i'm talking about??
Have way more scope to understand their clients, have more actual coaching strategies to implement and therefore get better longer lasting results and therefore client who refer more and stay longer.
Any-a-ways..
If learning the real caching skills and soft skills of communication you need to help people get real world results is what you're after??
